Message From the President

Vale Ted Wilkins

On behalf of members of the Kensington Marryatville Bowling Club I acknowledge the passing last week of long-time member Ted Wilkins. Ted was a well-respected member of the club for over 40 years and President 1986 -88.

I offer our condolences to Penny and Chris and their families.

Thankyou to Volenteers

Thank you to Ken Watson who organised and managed the recent successful WEA and Norwood International High School coaching programs. Thank you also to Alan Lambert who provides Ken with ongoing support and to Allan Wilkins, Bill Lewis and Tony Spriggs for their work with the students on Fridays. As I regularly comment programs such as these are important in increasing visibility of the club in the community and provide a source of potential Night Owls and Pennant players.

The recent club hire by the Adelaide Film Festival was a wonderful afternoon enjoyed by the group. Thank you to Liz Greenfield, Alan Lambert, Tony Spriggs and Bill Lewis for assisting with bowling and to Ken Mason for general set up and bar.
Thank you to Allan Wilkins for organising Come and Try.

Training:

Monday training will not be held on October 2 due to the public holiday but will resume as usual the following week.

On the occasion of late and unexpected withdrawal please contact Cecily Griffiths 0427 196 356.

2023/2024 Conditions of Play

Team Managers

There are changes for Team Managers due to elimination of the 2 end trials. Team Managers will need to be at match venues 45 minutes before the scheduled match start time, so that match cards can be drawn to allocate the playing rinks, such that players can practice on the rinks they have been drawn to play on for 30 minutes prior to match start time. Refer to details below.

Start Times

  • Saturday: Practice finishes at approximately 12.55pm – Play begins at 1pm
  • Wednesday: Practice finishes at approximately 12.10 pm – Play begins at 12.15pm
  • Thursday: Practice finishes at approximately 9.55am – Play begins at 10.00am
  • Early start: Practice finishes at approximately 9.10am – Play begins at 9.15am

Practice:

Greens are to be made available to those wishing to practice by:

  • Saturday: 12.30pm
  • Wednesday: 11.45am
  • Thursday: 9.30am
  • Early Start: 8.45am

Practice earlier than these times will be at the discretion of the home club's greenkeeper or Greens Manager only and must be respected however no practice will be allowed before 8.30am. This will impact Thursday play. Players can practice on any rink of the green of play prior to the draw of rinks for the game if the club permits. Once the draw for rinks has been completed, side Managers should notify players, and players must only practice on the rink they are drawn to play on.

Mid Game Break

The mid-game break is Mandatory, except for the Saturday Premier division and Thursday Premier division, unless hot weather conditions have been forecast and match early start rules apply. Even with early starts Clubs should ensure the wellbeing of their players.

Saturday Competition. A mid-game break shall be taken at 2.30pm. Every attempt should be made to limit the mid-game break to 15 minutes or less from the time the last team leaves the green.

Wednesday Competition. A mid-game break shall be taken at 1.45pm. Every attempt should be made to limit the mid-game break to 15 minutes or less from the time the last team leaves the green.

Thursday Competition. Players shall take a 10-minute break at the completion of 11 ends.

Early Start Games. There will not be a mid-game break. Team Managers are advised to be mindful of their duty of care for all participants and should monitor the conditions and consider breaks, if necessary, to provide participants with opportunities to hydrate.
Time Limit / Finishing Time All games will be played to a time limit of 4½ hours.

Uniforms, Hats, Caps and Footwear

Many Clubs have invested in arranging a Uniform design for their members to wear when representing their Club at pennant competitions and they should be encouraged to do so. Of greater concern is the variety of footwear that some bowlers have purchased to wear on bowling greens where the footwear does not meet the requirement of flat soles and no heels. Clubs should monitor their members footwear to reduce the possibility of damage to bowling greens, that have a big expense for Clubs to maintain.

Scoreboards

The scoreboard may be updated at any time by any person but must be updated at least every second end. The Skip, or Second in a Fours game, is responsible for ensuring that the scoreboard is correct as per the scorecard.

Night Owls 2023/24

A reminder that Night Owls commences on Tuesday 10th October and Thursday 12th October – one month away.  Please promote our evening social bowls to anyone who you think could be interested.  There are plenty of colourful Night Owls flyers in the clubhouse.  Please take some and distribute to neighbours, family and friends.  We could also do with some extra help on either night with meals and kitchen or helping new bowlers get started. If you can help us out at Night Owls please ring Anne O’Dea or Allan Wilkins.
